Identifying potential fishing zone
by remote
sensing technology
Fishermen are reputed for their skills in
negotiating the sea, but now they fear that the sea may be holding
more surprises for them in the days ahead. The irrational fear of
fish consumers, fanned by irresponsible stories in the media that
fish is likely to be contaminated, has only added to the woes of the
fisher folk. The means to earn livelihoods simply do not exist for
most fishermen. It is understandable that repairing fishing craft
and gear will take time. But it is not clear whether the government
has any plans for interim relief measures, particularly in the shape
of a food-for-work programme, that will not only provide relief but
enable the reconstruction of assets.
Japan who have mastered and implemented an
information system that stores and processes the data from various
satellites and visualizes them by generating a oceanographic
forecasting map and utilized the same for Satellite-based potential
fishing zones (PFZs). As you aware India's substantial fishery
resources are highly underutilized and it is widely recognized that
there is immense potential to increase the output of this sector.
Internationally modern fishing has used different tools to enhance
operational effectiveness. In addition to advanced fishing
equipment, information technology (IT) is now being widely used in
other countries. The availability of Geographical Information System
(GIS) makes it now possible to predict productive areas. This system
has been used since the 1990’s. We have found this technology is
most needed to our fishermen community.
